Search my posts and I think I wrote a removal and replacement article for cams. DON"T LOOSE THE CAM GEAR KEY as they are no longer available. It will break if you get it in the press when you push the cam off. There is a retainer and a space that are brittle cast iron. Remove the two bolts in the retainer through the holes in the cam gear and pull the cam. The cam gear needs to be pressed off if you are trying to save the cam. The thrust plate is cheap ( $8 from ford) so you should replace it anyway. The crank gear will come off with a puller. This allows me to advance my valve timing. I ended up sawing the gear off the gear hub and breaking the cast iron thrust plate to get the gear puller on the hub to remove it. If you can't get the cam off, you may have to break the plate to put a gear puller on the cam. The steel replacement gear is one thing I would spend money on Now, a good running 300 should net around 14-18 in a 56 F-100 with a rear end running somewhere of the vicinity of say 3:76. They have to be heated to ever get one off. It quit running and when he got the timing cover off it had a steel crank gear and plastic cam gear. Remember too, these engines used a 'Fiber ' timing gear jus like a Flathead from the factory. You don't have to turn the crank as when you draw the crank gear into place the cam will rotate on its own, and if lined up with the correct marks ,index itself. Put the cam in and bolt it in and torque the two bolts ,slide the crank gear on and have the correct tooth entering the cam gear, mind the front of the crank gear has the dot, the side towards you. You probably don't want to put the crank gear on first, because you will have a hell of a time getting the cam seated in the cam bearings, while trying to juggle the timing marks and keep from dammaging the cam bearings.
